Hazel Grace Maranan

Musical Theater Teacher

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, she went full throttle into professional theater, doing ensemble work in musical productions in English and Tagalog, and working with different theater companies. As a measure of her talent, as well as her commitment and professionalism, Hazel has also been given the opportunity to do minor or secondary roles in many productions that she’s done ensemble work for. As such, while she has done ensemble work for Dulaang UP’s "The Silent Soprano," Resorts World Manila’s "Bituing Walang Ningning," and Tanghalang Pilipino’s "Banaag At Sikat," "Noli Me Tangere," and "Walang Sugat,"

Hazel has done more productions where she was part of the ensemble and the supporting cast. These include: "Ang Kababaihan ng Malolos" (Filomena Tiongson), "Orosman at Zafira" (Zelima), and "Atang: Isang Dulang may Musika" (Iveng) for Dulaang UP; "Peter Pan" (Tiger Lily understudy) for Kids Acts Philippines; “The Sound of Music" (Nun) for Resorts World Manila; and "Ibalong" (Onglo / Buwaya), "Sandosenang Sapatos" (Diwata / Nanay / Ate), "Kleptomaniacs" (Mare), and "Mabining Mandirigma" as (Mabini Understudy / Taft) for Tanghalang Pilipino.

Hazel was also part of the touring cast of Tanghalang Pilipino’s “Sandosenang Sapatos” for the Beijing Theater Olympics in 2014, and worked as part of the ensemble of "Singapura: The Musical" (4th Wall Theater Company) which was staged in Singapore in 2015.

She played the lead role of Oryol in the restaging of “Ibalong” at the 2016 Ibalong Festival in Bicol, and the lead role of Mabini in the 3rd run of Tanghalang Pilipino's Mabining Mandirigma in December 2016. She was also priviledged to be one of the singing chorus for the Cultural Center of the Philippines' 45th Anniversary "MUSIKAL!", which featured outstanding original Filipino musicals in 2014. Where her years of diligence seem to be finally paying off, Hazel continues to hone her craft, participating in a 2016 Workshop on Vocal Production and Interpretation for Live Stage Performance at the Cultural Center of the Philippines with resource person Carmela Sinco. She is also a freelance musical theater teacher for kids, arguably the best measure of one’s patience and persistence. By: Katrina Stuart Santiago
